It’s always a little alarming when your car starts making weird noises out of the blue. This is why it pays to know what these car sounds may be and what a repair or replacement may involve.
Squealing While Braking
A high-pitched noise when you apply the brakes doesn’t mean your brakes are in trouble – yet. This is an indicator telling you that the pads are wearing down and need to be replaced.
Grinding While Braking
If you hear a grinding sound when braking, however, this is real cause for concern. This could indicate that the brake pads are now worn through and the caliper is rubbing against the rotor.
Howling or Whining
Either of these sounds may tell you that the bearings are wearing out. With front-wheel drive, this noise will generally change depending on which direction you turn. With rear-wheel drive, the sound is typically steady.
Chugging While Starting Your Car
If you hear a chugging when you turn the key, this is probably due to a bad battery that’s having difficulty getting the engine started. It’s possible that a jumpstart will revive it, but if it’s on the older side, you’ll probably need a new one.
Thudding from Your Tires
The first thing to do if you hear a thudding is check your air pressure in all four tires to make sure it is as the right level. If that’s not the problem, it may be due to the alignment, which we can easily correct at one of our locations.
